This book is VERY boring. It states the same points over and over again. It is very similar to an infomercial. Spend your money elsewhere – there are many other, much better books out there.

If you think “learn to master yourself before you master leading others” is a revelation, then this book is for you. Because this book offers advice on how to become a goal driven and ethical leader with a good attitude. If this sounds like something you have heard before in maybe 100 other leadership books and seminars, then you are right. This book offers nothing unique or original. In fact, if you have read lot of leadership books like me, then this book will bore you to death with the “obvious”.

Cashman, the CEO and founder of an executive training firm expresses his leadership philosophy here in book form.

He outlines seven steps for any leader to master:

    Personal Mastery

    Purpose Mastery

    Change Mastery

    Interpersonal Mastery

    Being Mastery

    Balance Mastery

    Action Mastery

Cashman describes each and proposes some self-exercises to accomplish these aims.

If you’ve never read a leadership/executive training book before you will get more out of this. Cashman’s approach struck me as very textbook. If this is the only or the main book you read in this area, you may get more out of it than I did.

Personally, I thought the book could have used more anecdotes and examples and less theory. I wound up skimming most of the latter sections in the book.

Cashman’s book is a thought provoking exercise in discovering how we create the results we get. Great tool for starting a “journey toward a more authentic life.”

This is a great book for anyone who believes that personal growth is at the root of professional success. In order to become a successful leader Kevin Cashman suggests that we need to develop our leadership style “from the inside out”, needing to create mastery in several areas such as personal, purpose, change, interpersonal mastery. I am a big fan of books that offer hands-on exercises to practice the concepts promoted. What use is it to understand concepts intellectually without any support on how to get them into your “muscle”? I happily recommend this book to my clients.
